Tic-Tac-Toe

Overview

Since around 1300 BCE there has been evidence of games played on a three-in-row board. The first printed reference of such a game was in 1858 describing the British named game "noughts and crosses". Some thirty years later in 1884 the widely known children's game "Tic-Tac-Toe" made its first documented appearance.

Tic-Tac-Toe is a simple two-player game in which players must match 3-in-a-row. Players are an integral part of any game, the number, role, and interaction patterns of the players all change the game mechanics.

Players

2 players

Resources

  • Sheet of paper
  • Pen or pencil

Goal/Objective

To place three marks in a row

Setup

Draw a 3 X 3 spaced grid on the a sheet of paper.

Game Mechanics

Choose a player to be X and one two be O.

Player X will go first, selecting one of the spaces on the grid to place their mark "X". The next turn will be player O, who will select a space on the grid placing their mark "O".

Each player takes turns placing their mark one of the grid spaces.

The game is over when one of the players has 3 marks in a row, or if there are no empty spaces left on the grid.

Outcome

The first person to place their mark (X or O) in 3 spaces in a row, whether that be horizontally, vertically or diagonally, will win the game. However, if all spaces are filled and no neither player has 3 in a row, this is considered a stalemate known as Cat.
